Overall, China and the United States stood out as the top producers and consumers of electricity, with China leading by a significant margin. While most countries displayed relatively balanced figures for production and consumption, Germany was an exception, consuming more electricity than it produced.
In 2014, China produced the most electricity at 5,398 billion kWh, followed by the United States at 4,099 billion kWh. China's consumption was slightly lower at 5,322 billion kWh, while the United States consumed 3,866 billion kWh. Russia was a distant third, producing 1,057 billion kWh and consuming 1,038 billion kWh, almost equating their production and consumption.
Japan and India followed, producing 936.2 and 871 billion kWh respectively. Japan consumed 856.7 billion kWh, whereas India consumed 698.8 billion kWh. Germany, notable for its higher consumption compared to production, produced 526.6 billion kWh but consumed 582.5 billion kWh.
Among the other countries, Canada, France, Brazil, and South Korea generally produced and consumed between 485 and 619 billion kWh, with Canada having the highest production and consumption within this group.
