The given bart displays the proportion of English and Welsh residents accommodated in rented and owned houses in the time frame from 1918 to 2011. In this period there was a noticeable gradual decline of the households in rented accommodation, while the number of households in owned accommodation was constantly growing.
Initially in 1918, the majority of English and Welsh families were renting their houses, with a percentage of over three quarters. While, the number of owned homes was nearly 3 times more. Between 1939 and 1953, both alternatives remained on the same level. However, before that period there was an increase of household owners, while there was also a decline in rentals. In 1971, the number of owned houses evened up with the amount of rented ones. From that moment on, there was both an increase and decrease of owned properties and rented unit, respectively. Finally by 2011, rented accommodation declined by nearly a half. At the same time, the number of house owners almost tripled.
