Nowadays, there are different views on how children should be brought up and what they should be allowed to do. Among several opinions on the correct way of upbringing, we can mention 2 most common beliefs. Some people consider it wrong to allow a child to make their own choice on daily matters as it might result in developing selfishness of an individual in the future. However, there are also others who claim quite the opposite. They tend to say that the allowance of decisions on personal issues at an early stage of growing up is crucial. Personally, I believe both views are right at some point, however, I strongly agree that before becoming an adult and having to make fairly more important decisions, you should be allowed to learn to decide for yourself.
First of all, there are a number of benefits that come along with allowing a child to make its own decision. For instance, if you let a toddler make even a simple decision, it teaches them independence. Hence, once they leave their home and go on to college, they are more likely to get around better and cope with their everyday problems without having to ask someone for help. What is more, each choice develops one’s likes and dislikes. Every decision we make develops our personality and creates our own preferences. Therefore, it is extremely crucial to let a teenager evolve and grow which is impossible without the possibility to choose. On the other hand, personal choices also allow us to make mistakes. While growing up we learn constantly about the world around us. Upbrings on their everyday basis should be allowed to choose, even if their guardians do not completely agree with them. Mistakes should not be considered as a failure but as a life lesson that comes along with life experience for the future.
On the contrary, the belief that there shouldn’t be the freedom of choice from earliest stages of growing up is not entirely incorrect. If you’d let a teen decide on whatever they want, they probably wouldn’t even continue their education. Children have much less life experience than adults, and in spite of the importance of their own views, they should be guided on what to do on a daily basis. What is more, too much independence when it comes to decision making might result in arrogance in a child’s behavior. Therefore, despite their right to choose for themselves, they should be taught ethics and respect for others.
All in all, opinions on upbringing might differ. However, what’s essential is to guide the growing up community of youth, yet still, letting them make their own choices and learn life lessons as they cannot be replaced or taught in any other way than through experience.
