Overall, the percentage of households in owned accommodation rose significantly over the period, conversely, the percentage of rented accommodation decreased markedly. Initially, rented accommodation was more prevalent, but this trend reversed after several decades.
In 1918, approximately 20% of households were owned, while roughly 75% were rented. By 1939, ownership had increased to about 30%, and this trend continued in subsequent years. In 1971, the proportions of owned and rented accommodations were each 50%. Ownership saw significant growth thereafter, reaching 70% by 1991, with a slight increase by 2001.
Conversely, the percentage of rented accommodations fell consistently from 75% in 1918 to just under 40% by 1991. After stabilizing somewhat by 1953, the decline continued; by 2011, rented accommodations comprised around 36% of the total.
