Many civilised societies today operate public libraries. Some people, however, believe that it is costly to maintain them and that the money should be spent on electronic libraries which can go on to replace the traditional one. This essay will highlight the major advantage and pitfalls of computer technology. First of all, e-library is superior in terms of resource and volume of information that can be assessed. With the aid of various computers including laptops and tablets, unlimited amount of books and journals can be assessed in a small space. In addition, when connected to the Internet, users can reach an unlimited amount of information. This makes it more efficient. On the other hand, electronic gadgets are known to be very expensive to run and also to maintain. In order to keep running, parts have to be serviced by a technician to prevent sudden crashes. Furthermore, the devices usually run on softwares which have to be kept up to date. They also need constant electricity to run. These factors make it less cost effective. Finally, not every member of the public is computer literate. Using the devices requires some sort of training beforehand, and unfortunately most people lack this privilege. For instance a survey carried out by a local Nigerian company revealed that 60% of the population didn't own a PC and that 20% have never used one. This proves that a new system would cut off a huge section of users. In conclusion, while it's reasonable for libraries to go completely paperless, but I believe it would be more wasteful to completely replace what's currently available.
