The bar chart compares five different age groups, namely 17-26, 27-36, 37-46, 47-54, and 55-64, in terms of the proportion of people who lived by themselves in the USA in four the year 1850, 1990, 1950 and 2000.
Looking at the graph, it is immediately obvious that the percentage of Americans aged 55-64 who living alone were the highest in all measured years. Additionally, figures for all age groups increased over the period.
The data of those living alone aged 37-46, 47-54, and 55-64 all followed a similar pattern over the measured period. There were significant increases in these figures beginning at about 2%, 2% and approximately 3% in 1850, ending at around 7%, 13% and 17% respectively.
Regarding the other two age group, residents settled in the USA who between 27 and 36 years old did not start living alone until 1900, with just over 2%, and rising to nearly 8% in 2000. Furthermore, Americans from 17 to 26 years old also started living by themselves later than the age group mentioned above 50 years, commencing at roughly 2% and elevating to around 5% in 2000.
