I learnt of management' s decision to close down the staff canteen due to low patronage and I am writing to express my unhappiness with the plan.
If shutdown, staff will have to go out, to find places to eat and the closest eatery around is about thirty minutes drive from the office. This will cause some employees to spend more than the normal one hour given for lunch breaks. Also, the cafeteria was created to check the quality of food that staff eat, after it was reported by our medical team, that some staff don' t eat healthy. Therefore, if closed, there will be no way for management to measure these factors. In view of these, I would ask that we do not close the canteen.
The major cause of the low patronage by our employees is mainly the high cost of meals at the canteen. While one can eat for a thousand Naira in any standard eatery in the city, our cafeteria charges one thousand five hundred Naira for a standard meal. Most personnel argue that with that amount, they can cook what will last them for three days at home.
To boost sales, I suggest that the price of meals are lowered to the rate that the other staff canteens around charge. I also suggest that the waiters be retrained on how to deal with customers. Many of our employees have complained on how the food servers talk to them each time they raise a concern in the eatery.
I look forward to seeing these recommendations implemented. It will be a win-win for all.
