In addition, citizens should be motivated to behave well not based on fear, but with grace and kindness.
On the other hand, having the capital sanction in place sends a strict warning to deter everyone from committing heinous acts. If society were to punish its criminals lightly, it would be sending a message to its citizens that they can get away with committing crime. This would be wrong and would create an unsafe environment for all, as people might do bad things to one another knowing that the consequences are light.
