International tourism has brought enormous benefit to many places. At the same time, there is concern about its impact on local inhabitants and the environment. Do the disadvantages of international tourism outweigh the advantages? v. 7
On the one hand holiday makers from all around the world increased the wealth in many areas on the planet. On the other hand, the international tourism also come with negative aspects of the location’s humans and nature. This essay will discuss the positive and negative effect of global travel. First of all we will have a look at the most obvious advantage of international tourism for locals in tourism hotspots: the financial benefit. Many mountain village farmers in the European alps used to live a very basic life until their land was converted into skiing areas for example. Before their villages became a glory skiing destination like in Soelden in Austria, these farmers were among the poorest people in Europe and often did not even have running water. Nowadays, these families are often rich hotel operators, or own a lift company and belong to the wealthiest people on the continent. Similar developments happen in all areas around the world, which are discovered as a tourist hotspot. The local habitants usually benefit financially and can lift their standard of living. Nevertheless, with a destination becoming more popular with tourists, there are always negative impacts coming with it. Previously poor islands with only a few thousand inhabitants suddenly become popular and need to host millions of tourists every year, like in Bali for instance. The local infrastructure has never been built to deal with a large number of tourists and rubbish and sewage systems are over their capacity limit. If the speed of growth in tourist numbers were matched by the speed of growth of the local infrastructure, there would not be a problem, but in reality, places like Bali have outgrown the public facilities by far and in the end the nature suffers. Not only the nature, but also the local people, who get stuck in traffic, suffers from air pollution caused by the large number of visitors and the effluence landing in the ocean. Overall, there are positive as well as negative points of international travel and in some tourist destinations the disadvantages definitely outweigh the benefits. However, if the growing visitor numbers and potential growth of an area were recognised early enough by the local governments, then many of the negative aspects of a tourism industry can be avoided,
