Many people believe that increasing the price of petrol is the best way to solve the growing traffic and pollution problems, . I strongly disagree that increasing the price of petrol is the best way to solve these two problems because although persons might try to find alternative ways of travelling, there are still industries that use vast amount of petrol.
Firstly, lets look at the airline industry, these planes take off every few minutes in some countries and they use a lot of fuel to cover those many long distances, Increasing the price of this product will not necessarily mean that less will be used on the journey because sometimes planes do have to divert because of adverse weather conditions or have to circle in the air before landing because the landing area is not ready or the gate needs to be clear. This would result in more petrol being consumed. These aircrafts do emit pollution that needs to be regulated by building airplanes that would be environmentally friendly.
Secondly, some individuals carpool or take public transportation, but this does not seem to stop the bottleneck of traffic in a number of our cities here in Canada. In Toronto and Alberta for example, the traffic is still heavy especially during peak hours of the day and on public holidays. Traffic comes to a halt every couple of minutes.
Finally, there are other methods that can be explored like the electric cars, that would definitely be environmentally friendly and sustainable, Research could also be done to see how water, wind or solar could be used to reduce the consumption of petrol.
In conclusion, regardless of the price of petrol, it will still be consumed and pollution will forever be a problem, unless other renewable energy can be utilized,
