Globally, there has been an increase in the level of crime in different Nations. This trend is more common in urban areas than in the rural environment. This essay will discuss why I think crime rate is higher in the urban regions compared to rural places and will profer solutions to reduce it.
To begin, criminal activities are on the rise in urban places due to the increased cost of living in these areas. As more people migrate from rural areas to the urban, they discover that life in the city is more expensive in comparison with the some towns. Hence, they resort to vices to provide for their needs. For example, levels of crime in Johannesburg, South Africa is higher than the other towns because cost of living is known to be dear in Johannesburg. Also, because developed areas are usually more populated, there is competition for scarce jobs, hence unemployment rate is high. Those who are unemployed with financial responsibilities, may see criminal activities as alternative measures against lack.
Although, there are more criminal acts in the cities compared to the rural areas, fortunately, if certain measures are put in place, this menace can be controlled. Firstly, the cost of basic necessities of citizens should be reduced. When people can afford amenities they need for daily living, they would not have to be involved in vices. For example, in an African country, the government had to reduce the price of Rice, which was its staple diet because people were becoming petty thieves because of hunger. Secondly, authorities of a Nation should empower their citizens with skills to generate funds if jobs are not enough. A cursory glance at China, will show the enrollment of the people by the government for various skill acquisition programs so that they can meet their needs. This has reduced the crime rate in their cities.
In conclusion, criminal activity is higher in urban areas due to unemployment and high standard of living. However, if the government cuts down on the prices of the basic needs of its citizens and empower them will skills to get money, vices will be brought to the lowest level in cities.
