The diagram below shows nitrogen sources and concentration levels in the groundwater of a coastal city.
The nitrogen cycle, is the series of processes by which nitrogen is converted in the environment and in living organisms, including nitrogen fixation and decomposition. In this biochemical cycle, nitrogen from the air is absorbed by various bacteria. The denitrifying bacteria enrich the soil with nitrogen. The nitrogen fixing bacteria in modules of leguminous plants also absorb nitrogen from air and supply nitrogen to the leguminous plants. The nitrogen rich soil, helps the non leguminous green plants to avoid nitrogen deficiency. The leguminous and non leguminous green plants are eaten by animals. The dead remains of leguminous and non leguminous plantsplants, dead animals and animal excreta, decompose and contribut to the soil in maintaining the nitrogen levels
