Dear Peter,
I was excited to read from you after a while. Indeed, the pictures you attached to your previous letter made me reminisce about our high school years. Also, you wanted to be updated on headline events in Nigeria and I thought to share one that has been making the rounds of late.
Recently, the news has been dominated by the protest against SARS. SARS was created over two decades ago as a special unit of the Nigerian Police Force. They were saddled with the responsibility of combating criminal activities amongst youths in particular. However, they have strayed from their scope of work and now tend to harass, exploit and at times, kill innocent individuals.
SARS antics inspired young people to rise-up and demand their immediate termination, hence several protests were organised across the country. The protest brought economic and social activities to a halt and generated lots of news coverage. The demonstration lasted for a month, making it one of the longest in Nigerian history. It was peaceful at first but later escalated into violence, as a result, lives were lost.
I was particularly interested in the protest because I also had an unfortunate encounter with a SARS officer. This first-hand experience made me appreciate the just reasons for the protests. The government responded to the demands of the protesters and SARS unit was subsequently abolished.
I hope I have been able to bring you up to speed with current events. My regards to your wife.
Yours affectionately,
Jay
