Dear Sir or Madam,
I'm writing to formally bring to your attention the environmental problems of my area which have made life unbearable for the people of the place. We need certain things to stay alive and healthy. We need clean air to breathe, and pure water to drink. However, the water we drink and the air we breathe in and out is heavily polluted.
Soil and water pollution is caused by factory effluents, excessive use of pesticides and insecticides.
Air pollution is caused by ruthless cutting down of trees, chimneys of factories, emissions from motor vehicles, burning of coal, wood and other fossil fuel, etc. Deforestation is the biggest problem in our region. There was a time when 50% of the soil, was covered with forests. But people, in their greed, have reduced it to a mere 10% now. Therefore, more attention should be paid to afforestation. It is necessary to check the unauthorized felling of trees.
Transport is also among the worst polluters. The emission of smoke by vehicles is increases carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Consequently, the temperature is increasing. It disturbs the delicate environmental balance. It harms human beings in many ways. The hydrocarbons and other particles emitted by the vehicles add fuel to the fire. That's why the ‘Public Transport System’ should be made fast, frequent, comfortable and cheap. Eco-friendly devices add green fuel should be used in vehicles. Also a tremendous potential exists for increasing the population's physical activity by making environmental changes that would encourage and support the use of walking and bicycling as a mode of transportation.
We need also food that is safe to eat. Unfortunately, the industrial or "conventional" way of producing food causes large-scale environmental degradation. I also want to draw your attention to the problem of obesity. Obesity has increased dramatically over the past two decades and currently about 50% of adults and 25% of children are overweight. The current epidemic of obesity is caused largely by an environment that promotes excessive food intake and discourages physical activity. Public health interventions, opportunities, and potential strategies to combat the obesity epidemic by promoting an environment that supports healthy eating and physical activity must be discussed. There should be more training facilities. For example, physical training grounds, running tracks outdoors.
Finally, I want to say that we need a recycling plant in our area. There are many benefits of recycling. It conserves energy, reduces air, soil and water pollution, reduces greenhouse gases, conserves natural resourses. When we recycle, used materials are converted into new products, reducing the need to consume natural resources.
In conclusion, I must say, we should think about future generations. Without cooperation at the international level, no doubt, deterioration of the environment will go on.
Yours faithfully,
Tori Campbell
