The thing that has changed me most as a person is attending boarding school. When I arrived in Salem for the first time, I was 15 years old with very little german knowledge. It was extremely challenging to navigate the culture, language and boarding life for the first time. Once COVID-19 hit Germany, I was unable to go home and I lived in the school for about 2 months with 25 other students from across the world. I became friends with people I otherwise never would have spoken to. It was lonely, but it taught me the importance of community and hope. I am currently in my third year of attending this school, and I have made life-long friends, experienced the beauty of the culture, and learned that I have the strength to overcome any hardship life throws my way. Not only has boarding school been an amazing opportunity to improve my education and see the world in a unique way, it has taught me the strength of hope, the importance of adapting, and the fact that home is where the heart is.
