Dear Admissions Committee
It is my great pleasure to be called upon as a reference for Esma Nur Ham, a high honours undergraduate student in our program. I have known Esma for four years and taught several classes throughout her studies. During that time, Esma proved herself to be an exceptional individual by demonstrating excellent research, language, communication and translation skills.
From the outset, Esma distinguished herself by actively participating in discussions during my Current Issues class in which a wide range of topics regarding education, politics, culture and technology were discussed. It was evident that she was an articulate and perceptive student who had the ability to consider contemporary issues from multiple perspectives and offer feasible solutions despite being in her first year. Since then, her critical thinking skills only continued to get better as classes delved deeper into a variety of complex and advanced concepts involving different forms of literature, media, texts and their relevance to translation studies. She was able to skillfully apply the theoretical knowledge learned during these classes into practice for translation and interpretation tasks. Her final paper for my Translation of Texts in Politics course is proof that she is fully capable of accurately analyzing political discourse in sociocultural, ideological and institutional conditions as well as exploring the role translators play when rendering such texts.
Esma is an outstanding student with exceptional academic achievements in both written and oral translation. Our highly competitive program is designed to ensure students acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to become competent translators in the areas of literature, tourism, media, technology, law and medicine. Esma excelled in all of these areas admirably, graduating with a GPA of 3, 59 in a class where the highest was 3, 73. Her written assignments were always creative, clear, concise, well-thought-out and it was apparent that she had gained the ability to study in an interdisciplinary manner at the end of her undergraduate studies.
While Esma is perfectly efficient at working independently, she has also participated as a team player in several group projects. For my Current Issues in Translation class, her group produced and presented an excellent semester long paper on the effectiveness of domain-unlimited speech-to-speech translation applications within a domain-limited area. Multiple scenerios specifically related to travel were created and scored based on how accurately they were translated using mobile applications that are free and easily accessible to the general public. It was clear that countless hours of research along with amazing teamwork took place to successfully complete the project.
Aside from her academic achievements, perhaps one of Esma’s most redeeming qualities is her willingness to expand her horizons. I was aware that she worked as a guide interpreter for tourists at Izmir Metropolitan Municipality during her studies but as I glanced over to her credentials while writing this reference letter, I can see that she has accomplished much more in various different fields. From becoming a certified English teacher to learning social media management and running small businesses, I can tell that Esma is contantly looking for ways to innovate herself while branching out to areas other than translation. One constant factor, however, is her genuine love and endless enthusiasm for the English language.
On a personal level, Esma is a thoughtful, bright, curious individual who meticulously completes every task assigned to her with a positive attitude. I am confident that she has the skills, drive and talent to make significant contributions to her chosen field. As such, I have no reservations giving Esma my highest recommendation for this program. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions regarding her character or past academic work.
