Hi Sheila!
Nice to hear from you! It has been a while since last time we talk, but I’m happy that you’re doing a project about people’s reading habits in different countries.
To tell the truth, I’m not really keen into reading but I can tell you a little bit about my appreciations in Spain.
I suppose the biggest change has been the digitalization of libraries and books, as well as the “colonization” of social media in our lives. I feel that people are reading faster ad less concentrated that some decades ago due to the quicker rhythms of live, as well as the huge number of possibilities offered on Internet.
Adults are reading ebooks while they’re on the metro or the bus just to avoid wasting time, whereas younger people seem to be just reading contents available in social media. What can be dangerous as they can find several fake news and re-share them allowing other people to read them. Maybe, older people prefer the paper format, but most of them also are being adapes to the new technologies as they can just get access in on click to whatever they want to read.
In general, I feel the habit of reading a good romance or science fiction book is being lost as people prefer to read shorter things, what explains the success of files in Twitter to tell stories, specially for new generations.
Let me know what do you think about my comments. Where do you stand on this topic in New Zeland?
I hope to see you soon and talk about this face to face!
Best wishes with your project,
Ariadna
