My name is Mohammad Irvan Aditya from Indonesia, a country who have third biggest rainforest in the world. Rainforest provide huge varies of ecology and ecosystem services, including storing billion tons of carbon, water supply, and a place for more than 50% of terrestrial biodiversity. However, each year we always exhibited by media about logging, forest degradation, and fires event. Again, it’s always cannot captured in early stage and make it more worst. As an impact, many natural disaster has been felt and faced such as hydro-meteorological hazard and drought. I guess, satellite imagery potentially to detect early disturbances in the forest ecosystem. This situation encourage me to learn more about utilizations of remote sensing for ecology and ecosystem which can for early warning systems. It cannot denied, that better education environment will enhance our results. I have checked that University in Russia offering program in Master Geography. This program provide excellent curriculum and flexibilities, who students allow to choose their main interest. One of the major offered by this program about Geo-information and Remote Sensing Ecology, which is pretty similar with my main interest and goals. I believe, I can greatly improve my knowledges and skills by attend in this program. Another reason to study abroad in Russia are to grounding experience of culture divergent and exchange further. I graduated from State University of Malang with major in Geography. Since I was student, I have been part of practicum assistants in my department for remote sensing studies. It was extended until my graduation and adding another courses such as spatial statistic. I working with my lecturer to arrange practicum instructions, and attend in the class to giving student assist and instructions for their project. This experience very helpful to develop my teaching skills and leaderships. I have seen that my main interest in field of remote sensing, which is encourage me to take internship in Remote Sensing Application Centre of Indonesia. Furthermore, I was success studying pasture phenology using remote sensing as a partial requirement for undergraduate degree. I have been partially working as freelancer for spatial data analyst to assist people across disciplines from aquaculture, environmental science, and education. Moreover, I’m part of research team led by Dr. Ike Sari Astuti, which further I was employed by him as research assistant following my graduation. During these time, I working with various task including analysis long-term data, and validating remote sensing based model. Those derive me to able to learn from conventional or traditional technique to more comprehensive method such as spatial data science. This is part of my dedication to adapting to the rapid changes in global research community. Peak of this period, I had opportunity to meet researchers from Australia and Malaysia to help their research project. As a consequent, I have enhanced my critical thinking of how to select appropriate method, calibrate and evaluate model, and synthesis international publications. These all made me qualified to apply to this master’s program. In order to complete my future master degree, I propose to take thesis about analysis forest vegetation type disturbances using satellite remote sensing data. To tackle all of these questions, I designed my research to utilizes land surface phenology derived from satellite imagery combining with machine learning algorithms includes random forest, super vector machine, and k-nearest neighbor gathered with field data for mapping vegetation types. An iterative decomposition analysis, Breaks for Additive Seasonal Trends (BFAST) will applied for detecting forest disturbances (e. g fires, deforestations) from long-term data. As an output, this study will explains deeper about level of risk of vegetation types facing by specific disturbances such as fires. Moreover, an historical dates and locations of forest disturbance events which has been felt will also revealed by these analysis. In additions, through this information kindly helpful for build an early warning systems for anticipate forest degradations. My future goal is to develop myself as lecturer with research skills in field of remote sensing, especially in ecology and environment. With my certain background knowledge, skills and experiences would let me as appropriate candidates for attend in Master of Geography. I believe, this Russian Federal Government Scholarships program is big opportunity for me to escalate my knowledge in this field and also as a bridge to reach my future goals.
