Dear Professor McGuire,
I am writing to apply for the Assistant Professor position in the Department of Health Policy (DHP), London School of Health Economics and Political Science. As a full-time faculty member with teaching, research, supervisory, and managerial/administrative responsibilities at the Department of Health Services Management in Iran University of Medical Sciences (IUMS), a significant part of my work has been related to health policy and healthcare management and reading about the DHP activities, I believe that I can help for further development of teaching and research activities and obtaining external funds.
In terms of research, I have been involved in various health policy and healthcare management studies, conducted based on both qualitative and quantitative methods. The qualitative research works included grounded theory research on paramedics, phenomenological study on earthquake-affected people and also cancer counselors, qualitative studies on experience of patients and clinicians from hospital accreditation and performance measurement mechanisms, the experience of Afghan refugees from primary health care in Iran, and also document analysis of national regulations' support and advocacy for the right of people with disability. About quantitative methods, my research included generally meta-analysis of health intervention and health and health economics outcomes as well as surveys. The list of my publications in peer-reviewed journals and other research achievements such as awarded funds are detailed in my CV.
As a full-time faculty member, I have the responsibility of teaching. My teaching experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels included a wide range of modules such as Health Policy, Healthcare Evaluation, Principles of HTA, Systematic Reviews, and both Qualitative and Quantitative Research Methods. Besides the module-based teaching, holding workshops for academics and healthcare staff also is an ongoing and continuous task of my job. Some of the workshops I have lectured in were arranged as adult learning for hospital managers in a joint collaboration with the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office (EMRO). In 2017, I was awarded the Vosoogh Prize for teaching quality in the IUMS.
In terms of my supervisory career, I have worked with eight Ph. D. and nine M. Sc. students with completed theses and am currently supervising nine students with their theses in progress. Also as an adviser, I have worked with more than twenty Ph. D. students during ten years of my academic life in the IUMS.
My managerial experience included teaching Deputy since 2017 and being the head of the Educational Development Office within 2014-2017 in the School I work, which both have been helpful experiences in developing interpersonal communication skills and management of human resources. I am also the Head of Scientific Olympiad Board in the field of Health System Management, held nationally by Iran's Ministry of Health and Medical Education.
In summary, I believe that my experience as a full-time faculty member with teaching, research, supervisory, and managerial tasks can help to use the department's capacities for further attraction of external funds through new teaching and research activities. I appreciate having the opportunity of discussing my plans at the interview.
Kind Regards,
Aidin Aryankhesal
