Hello, I'm Franco Cheng. Today I'll share my views on blended learning and its effects.
Due to Covid-19, the suspension of face-to-face lessons in school has accelerated the transition from traditional learning modes to blended learning modes. By integrating conventional learning and distance online learning, teachers can upload teaching materials to online platforms. It also allows students to watch teaching videos and do supplementary exercises online, while face-to-face lessons emphasise skill applications. As a result, students' learning efficiency is enhanced.
Some English teachers have recorded self-directed learning videos for students to learn different English topics and skills at home. However, students didn't perform well in the exam. It is because when students come back to school, their teachers would give them a quiz immediately, to test whether they have watched that video.
However, it is not effective. Research shows that interactive videos, for instance, completing worksheets whilst watching videos, outclass just watching a video and make students more engaged. Besides, students need sufficient time to digest the content. When students have tests frequently, they have insufficient time to learn from mistakes. Their mistakes will only accumulate, eventually leading to a decline in English proficiency. Therefore, teachers can provide video worksheets and reduce the frequency of quizzes in lessons.
Moreover, we need to consider what content can be learnt and practised online carefully. For example, although students can learn and improve grammar skills by watching videos, it isn't easy to improve their communication strategies by having a virtual group discussion. Therefore, it's usually best to practice group discussion when students have a face-to-face English lesson. Students can improve their skills from teachers' immediate feedback. As a result, the effectiveness of blended learning would be enhanced.
Thank you for taking the time to watch this video, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
