I guess people who are not used to physical activity should start running. In start it should be slow, or even walking. It should be gradually increased in intensity over period of few months, and only when body gets used to it should be increased to level of moderate running. Dont stress yourself from start. You can get injured, you can loose interest fast. Go slowly in start, gradually increasing intensity, and watch your diet of course (eat vegetables, fruits, food with proteins, watch not to take way too much carbs, eat healthy basically, drink lot of water etc. )
Running will help you to boost confidence, to be healthier, and if you suffer from anxiety or depression, studies have shown that it helps reduce stress and anxiety.
Also, going to gym and doing resistance exercises is good too for you. Just dont overdo anything in start, thread softly.
