What are Macbeth strength's and Weaknesses? VY9Em
Strength: In the play, 'Macbeth' by Shakespeare, Macbeth is a man with undeniably strong ambition and true conscience. At the beginning of the play, Macbeth was portrayed as an ambitious soldier, who fought for his king. Although, once the witches planted the idea in his head of him potentially becoming King of Scotland, his striving and ambitious nature were ones that turned into his weakness. Macbeth has changed subconsciously throughout the play and it is an ambition that dominates his nature and ultimately causes this to be his fatal weakness. Although Macbeth is flawed with the weakness of ambition, he is not all that bad. Macbeth is first presented as a good man who fought for his king with great courage. He was an extremely loyal and brave soldier. because unlike Shakespeare's other works Macbeth is not all evil. He is consumed by his evil ambition and guilt for the throne of Scotland that he will go to any measures necessary to achieve it. Macbeth's character is very cunning and witty. He is smart enough to understand that Duncan is very kind and naïve and he takes advantage of the fact that he could easily overthrow him. The first thing of Macbeth’s character that we learn of is portrayed by the captain who calls him a ‘‘valor’s minion’’, this suggests his courage in the battle that he has shown and has made an impact on the enemy’s side. This is his strength, to which we can all agree on. Yet, the Banquo's metaphor, ‘’ look into the seeds of time, And say which grain will grow and will not, ’’ depicts the prophecies to be a scam, but Macbeth’s influence has turnaround all the opinions that are threat to his immoral intentions and thoughts; this intimates a dynamic perceptions flipping through his mind which are arguably dark and evil. At first, Macbeth does not accept violence as the path to fulfill his ambition. This is evidence through the quote, ‘’If chance will have me king, why, chance may crown me without my stir’’. Macbeth unknowingly expects the title of the king to deliver the satisfaction of his ambition, but the moment when he learns the heir of the king, Malcolm, the chances that gave side on Macbeth's success fell. He quickly resolves to violence, such a speedy transition shows that Macbeth is relatively easy to corrupt. For a moment, he hopes he will have to do nothing untoward in order to ascend to the throne, but the moment he encounters the very first obstacle, his nature metamorphosed into a villainous one. Thus, we learn that he is disloyal as well, We don't often think of these qualities as strengths. Extermination is the only way of ascending the throne in order to meet his ambition. Macbeth requests, “Stars, hide your fires; let not light see my black and deep desires’’, this builds up the imagery and a weak personification. He is dragging the ‘stars’ in his sin to fulfill his deeds, but, Macbeth has not completely stepped up the stairs, he still believe that his desires which he desperately wants is a great sin to commit and the fact that lights is requested to not shine on his crime, makes Macbeth a balanced character till now in the quest to become the king. Weakness: As the play progresses, Macbeth descends further and further into evil. He takes the Witches' misleading prophecies as gospel and decides to murder his lifelong friend and comrade Banquo to ensure his throne is secure. This decision makes us lose any respect or sympathy for Macbeth as he puts his greed for power above morality without any remorse or hesitancy. Furthermore, Macbeth recklessly decides to act on impulse from this point on in the play. He slaughters Macduff's entire family as punishment when his enemy flees Scotland. The murders of an innocent woman and her children are little more than meaningless acts of violence. Potentially, it is revealing that Macbeth's previous murders always had some logic (however disturbed) behind them, whereas now he murders only for his evil's sake. The pressures from his wife Lady Macbeth and the witches make him eager to kill Duncan, but most importantly it is his overwhelming ambition for power that makes him a weak character. Throughout the first act, the character of Macbeth is developed, in which Macbeth's strengths were ambition, courage, and honor. His use of these strengths and loyalty to King Duncan earned him the title of "Thane of Cawdor. " After the murder of Banquo, however, his large amount of pride and ambition disrupted his morals and faltered his heroic image, leading to the backfiring of the strengths that he once had, which later became his weaknesses. When Macbeth was visited by the three witches, his superstitious nature was brought out, causing him to trust them and their prediction that he will rise to the throne if he kills Duncan. He wasn't satisfied with his position as the Thane of Cawdor. This is one of Macbeth's weaknesses because he has no sense of self and is controlled and easily convinced to do things that he knows are morally wrong. Macbeth is introduced in the play as a warrior hero, whose fame on the battlefield wins him great honor from the king. Essentially, though, he is a human being whose private ambitions are made clear to the audience through his asides and soliloquies (solo speeches). These often conflict with the opinion others have of him, which he describes as "golden" (I: 7, 33). Despite his fearless character in battle, Macbeth is concerned by the prophecies of the Witches, and his thoughts remain confused, both before, during, and after his murder of King Duncan. When Duncan announces that he intends the kingdom to pass to his son Malcolm, Macbeth appears frustrated. When he is about to commit the murder, he undergoes terrible pangs of conscience. Macbeth is at his most human and sympathetic when his manliness is mocked and demeaned by his wife (Act I, Scene 7). However, by Act III, Scene 2, Macbeth has resolved himself into a far more stereotypical villain and asserts his manliness over that of his wife. His ambition now begins to spur him toward further terrible deeds, and he starts to disregard and even to challenge Fate and Fortune. Each successive murder reduces his human characteristics still further until he appears to be the more dominant partner in the marriage. Nevertheless, the newfound resolve, which causes Macbeth to "wade" onward into his self-created river of blood (Act III, Scene 4), is persistently alarmed by supernatural events. The appearance of Banquo's ghost, in particular, causes him to swing from one state of mind to another until he is no longer sure of what is and "what is not" (I: 3, 142). But Macbeth's excessive pride is now his dominant character trait. This feature of his personality is well presented in Act IV, Scene 1 when he revisits the Witches of his own accord. His boldness and impression of personal invincibility mark him out for a tragic fall. We can see that Macbeth is not all evil and that the person who is behind all this chaos is Lady Macbeth. When it was time to kill Duncan and the plan was set he felt guilty because he understood how good Duncan was to him, however in the back of his mind he had an evil ambition and desire to obtain the throne. When he mentions this to his wife she doesn't pity him and tells him that he must go on with the plan. "I have no spur To prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambitions, which o'er leap itself and falls on the other. "(Act 1, Scene 7, Lines 25-27) In this quote, Macbeth admitted that it was only ambition that motivated him to become disloyal to Duncan. This is one of Macbeth's biggest weaknesses in which he gives in to his evil temptations, even though he knows that his actions are immoral. He realizes that what he did was wrong and that he did it through illegal actions. It seems as though Lady Macbeth conspired with this plan and had no feeling about what bad action she committed. In general, Lady Macbeth, and well as the witches, were responsible for turning Macbeth's strong ambitions into his most major flaw. In Macbeth's case, his negative traits such as his gullibility, lack of control and willpower overcome the strengths and advantages that he once had; his pride, honor, and strong, ambitious nature. Macbeth's strengths fail, turning out to be his weaknesses, which makes him a tragic hero because he was once honorable and highly respected; his downfall is caused by his own mistakes. After he starts committing murders, his guilty conscience comes out and leads to the deterioration of his character, leaving him unhappy and remorseful.
