The two literary and non literary extracts that I have chosen are Pillow book’s “Especially delightful is the first day” and IT’S GLO blog abroad’s “All your fears about solo travel blog number 10”. I am going to explore the global issue of how social and cultural norms affect an individual’s connection with others. Social and cultural norms are the rules or the expectations of behaviour and thoughts based on share beliefs within a specific group or an individual’s own perspective. Which strongly connects to the two extracts that I am going to cover Sei Shonagon’s pillow book and the extract I have chosen explores how an enclosed world in the palace life, the world of pomp, superficiality and hierarchy affects the way the writer sees the world and how it affects the interactions with people around her. On the other hand with the blog abroad’s extract, the writer encourages the readers specifically females, to be free from their assumptions about female vulnerability when travelling solo and whilst having a meaningful, open-minded trip interacting with other people. In the pillow book “especially delightful is the first day” extract, the author directly located Sei’s background. She is a women who’s an attendant in court. Despite her low position in court, she feels superior and confident of having such a job where she can enjoy the ideal life working in a palace. In the extract, the author attended to the emperor’s new year parade and her observations of different people from the palace. From one of her description it shows how “everyone pays great attention to people’s appearance and dresses with the utmost care, " which is mentioned in line 2 from the extract. “Appearance” in palace life is what everyone only thinks or cares, which reflects on the author's cultural and social norm in the life of a palace. Throughout the whole extract, Sei uses a very mean, snobbish attitude to describe people around her. In the extract Sei distanced herself from the crowd after observing a number of women with their skin not properly powdered. It mentioned how she can see the texture of their faces, how their skin showed through an unpleasantly like the dark patches of earth in a garden where the snow has begun to melt, which mentioned in line 20 from the extract. The high expectations and perfectionism of the life in the palace blinded her which leads her to not pleased with everything. Her arrogance towards these people from not being perfect like in her ideal palace life makes her more distant with other people, disconnecting with the outside world. Imagery is used in line 21 and 22, “I shrank into the back of my carriage and could no longer see what was happening. ” This is an imagery of shutting herself from the outside world, limiting her chances of interacting with the real world, with real people, which makes her to be so full of herself and being judgemental with everything she sees. Throughout the whole extract she is describing her daily life. From the extract the author is actually alone all along her journey of observing her surroundings. She distracted herself from loneliness by observing other people’s business along with judgements and criticisms as to make her feel better of herself. She is envy of other people’s lives in the palace, looking down at people or things in vulnerable states, criticising appearances of different people. Sei describes how the attendants in court immediately mocked the candidates once they were gone. This is a good example of the social norm in court where it’s all about hierarchy and social class, of who had power and who didn’t. In the case, the candidates sought help even from the attendants, who looked down on them and mocked them. The lack of sincerity, the pursuit of superficial glory and self-importance are part of the “norm” of palace life. There doesn’t seem to be any genuine feelings or sincere relationship among people. Unlike Sei’s pillow book, the blog abroad have a totally different attitude and the perspective of how social and cultural norms can affect one’s connection with other people. The author of the blog is giving out positive, encouraging words and advices for the readers of dealing with the fear of solo travelling. The author believes social norms are the limitation to our freedom to explore the world, through this blog she encourages the readers to not be tied down by these assumptions and to be open minded. The quote of the blog is “My biggest fears revolve around getting kidnapped, raped, or attacked in someway because I’m a solo female traveler. Next is probably getting robbed and maybe loneliness. ” This already shows how social and cultural norm, in this case which is the gender stereotypes affect how people have the opportunity or had a chance to interact with other people around the world without having fear. The first paragraph of the extract shows the problems of being a female when travelling, by starting the blog off with the phrase “This is a common fear amongst women”. The word “common” pinpoints the social and cultural norm of the differences of people with different gender roles and sexuality, as in the blog it shows women being disadvantaged when travelling. It is believed by many people that women is being disadvantaged, which is also believed by the female writer herself. In line 6 of the extract, it tells readers to stay in public spaces and avoid dodgy streets or neighborhoods. Unlike the extract in the pillow book, the author uses a warm tone and a humorous choice of language to encourage the readers to face their fears of solo travelling. For example in line 13, she encourages us saying “talk to strangers, and remember everything we learned growing up, yeah screw all of it” Using a friendly tone to tell readers to forget the time when they were told to not to talk to strangers, but instead to open up and interact with others. This encourages the readers to not be affected by these social norms encouraging us to defy what we’ve learnt. Besides the blog there is another photo of a women sitting on the grass facing the magnificent wide view of the blue sky and the blue ocean. The view is the representation of freedom, and it also captures the feeling of running away from your fears. This tied up with the whole purpose of the blog, where as the author tries to provoke the idea of how social and cultural norms that we faced as an outsider when travelling, which in this case is to be more open-minded and being more interactive with different people In terms of techniques and choices of language, both the pillow book and the blog abroad extracts have the use of humour within the text. Pillow book for example, uses a mean, mocking language based on Sei’s negative thoughts on other people. “The candidates who are old and white-haired things do not go so smoothly” in line 25 to 26, the tone of the author’s language is evil. Even though we as readers will most probably found this sentence funny or humorous. From the style of language it shows the real characteristics of Sei and it reflects on how her personality leading her to feel lonely and feel abandoned from other people. Travel blog on the other hand has a different attitude throughout the whole extract by using very warming and positive giving out advices for the readers. In a different approach the author also tries to use humour in the choice of language. For example in line 14-15 where she exclaims, “Ahhh, the horror! WRONG. They are PEOPLE. A PERSON. Just like you. ” The words such as “wrong” and “people” are in capital letters, from the tone of the sentence, the author is jokingly dismissing a fear that we brought up to experience As to Imagery and allusions in the pillow book, how sei is looking at the different people surrounding her and observing the tiniest little details of them, makes an allusion of the idea of a women who is nothing but full of bore and loneliness inside of her. And in the blog abroad extract, “Because the wrath that cometh, dear Jesus, they have no idea. ” Quoted from line 7 to 8. “The wrath that cometh” is the allusion to the bible, as they usually uses the similar terms of language in a bible. The terms of techniques, the choices of language, imagery and allusions are all tools to build up the characteristics of the authors and understanding their perspectives on their social and cultural norms, which by judging their characteristic we can understand how it affects on an individuals connection with other people by the influence of social and cultural norms in their own community.
The two literary and
non literary
extracts
that I have chosen are
Pillow
book’s
Especially
delightful is the
first
day” and IT’S
GLO
blog
abroad’s
“All your
fears
about solo travel
blog
number 10”. I am going to explore the global issue of how
social
and
cultural
norms
affect
an individual’s connection with others.
Social
and
cultural
norms
are the
rules
or the expectations of
behaviour
and thoughts based on share beliefs within a specific group or an individual’s
own
perspective. Which
strongly
connects to the two
extracts
that I am going to cover

Sei
Shonagon
’s
pillow
book
and the
extract
I have chosen explores how an enclosed
world
in the
palace
life
, the
world
of pomp, superficiality and hierarchy
affects
the way the writer

the

the interactions with

On the
other
hand with the

abroad’s
extract
, the writer
encourages
the readers

In the

shows
how “everyone pays great attention to

"
which
is mentioned
in
line
2 from the
extract
. “Appearance” in
palace
life
is what everyone
only
thinks
or cares, which reflects on the author's
cultural
and
social
norm
in the
life
of a palace.

Throughout the
whole
extract
,
Sei
uses
a
very
mean, snobbish attitude to
describe
people
around
her.

In the
extract
Sei
distanced herself from the crowd after observing a number of
women
with their skin not
properly
powdered. It mentioned how she can
see
the texture of their faces, how their skin
showed
through an

Imagery
is
used
in
line
21 and 22, “I shrank into the back of my carriage and could no longer
see
what was happening. ” This is an
imagery
of shutting herself from the outside
world
, limiting her chances of interacting with the real
world
, with real
people
, which
makes
her to be
so
full of herself and being
judgemental
with everything she
sees
.

Throughout the
whole
extract
she is describing her daily
life
. From the
extract
the
author
is actually alone all along her journey of observing her surroundings. She distracted herself from loneliness by observing

Sei
describes
how the attendants in
court
immediately mocked the candidates once they

good
example
of the
social
norm
in
court
where it’s all about hierarchy and
social

, of
who
had power and
who
didn’t. In the case, the candidates sought
help
even from the attendants,
who
looked down on them and mocked them. The lack of sincerity, the pursuit of superficial glory and self-importance are part of the
“norm”
of
palace
life
. There doesn’t seem to be any genuine feelings or sincere relationship among
people
.

Unlike
Sei
’s
pillow
book
, the
blog
abroad
have a
totally
different
attitude and the perspective of how
social
and
cultural
norms
can
affect
one’s connection with
other
people
. The
author
of the
blog
is giving out
positive
, encouraging words and advices for the readers of dealing with the
fear
of solo
travelling
. The
author
believes
social
norms
are the limitation to our freedom to explore the
world
, through this
blog
she
encourages
the readers to not
be tied
down by these assumptions and to be
open minded
.

The
quote of the
blog
is “My biggest
fears
revolve
around
getting kidnapped, raped, or attacked in someway
because
I’m a solo
female
traveler.
Next
is
probably
getting robbed and maybe loneliness. ” This already
shows
how
social
and
cultural
norm
,
in this case
which is the gender stereotypes
affect
how
people
have the opportunity or had a chance to interact with
other
people
around
the
world
without having fear.

The
first
paragraph of the
extract
shows
the problems of being a
female
when
travelling
, by starting the
blog
off with the phrase “This is a common
fear
amongst
women”
. The word “common” pinpoints the
social
and
cultural
norm
of the differences of
people
with
different
gender roles and sexuality, as in the
blog
it
shows
women
being disadvantaged
when
travelling
. It
is believed
by
many
people
that
women
is
being disadvantaged
, which is
also
believed by the
female
writer herself.

In
line
6 of the
extract
, it
tells
readers to stay in public spaces and avoid dodgy streets or neighborhoods. Unlike the
extract
in the
pillow
book
, the
author
uses
a warm
tone
and a humorous
choice
of
language
to
encourage
the readers to face their
fears
of solo
travelling
. For
example
in
line
13, she
encourages
us saying “talk to strangers, and remember everything we learned growing up, yeah screw all of it” Using a friendly
tone
to
tell
readers to forget the time when they were
told
to not to
talk to strangers,
but
instead
to open up and interact with others. This
encourages
the readers to not be
affected
by these
social
norms
encouraging us to defy what we’ve
learnt
.

Besides
the
blog
there is another photo of a
women
sitting on the grass facing the magnificent wide view of the blue sky and the blue ocean. The view is the representation of freedom, and it
also
captures the feeling of running away from your
fears
. This tied up with the
whole
purpose of the
blog
,
where as
the
author
tries to provoke the
idea
of how
social
and
cultural
norms
that we faced as an outsider when
travelling
, which
in this case
is to be more open-minded and being more interactive with
different
people

In terms of techniques and
choices
of
language
, both the
pillow
book
and the
blog
abroad
extracts
have the
use
of
humour
within the text.
Pillow
book
for
example
,
uses
a mean, mocking
language
based on
Sei
’s
negative
thoughts on
other
people
. “The candidates
who
are
old
and white-haired things do not go
so
smoothly
” in
line
25 to 26, the
tone
of the
author’s
language
is evil.
Even though
we as readers will most
probably
found this sentence
funny
or humorous. From the style of
language
it
shows
the real characteristics of
Sei
and it reflects on how her personality leading her to
feel
lonely and
feel
abandoned from
other
people
. Travel
blog
on the
other
hand has a
different
attitude throughout the
whole
extract
by using
very
warming and
positive
giving out advices for the readers. In a
different
approach the
author
also
tries to
use
humour
in the
choice
of
language
. For
example
in
line
14-15 where she exclaims, “
Ahhh
, the horror!
WRONG
. They are
PEOPLE
. A PERSON.
Just
like you. ” The words such as “
wrong
” and “
people
” are in capital letters, from the
tone
of the sentence, the
author
is
jokingly
dismissing a
fear
that we brought up to
experience

As to
Imagery
and
allusions
in the
pillow
book
, how
sei
is looking at the
different
people
surrounding her and observing the tiniest
little
details
of them,
makes
an
allusion
of the
idea
of a
women
who
is nothing
but
full of bore and loneliness
inside of
her.

And in the
blog
abroad
extract
, “
Because
the wrath that
cometh
, dear Jesus, they have no
idea
. ” Quoted from
line
7 to 8. “The wrath that
cometh
” is the
allusion
to the bible, as they
usually
uses
the similar terms of
language
in a bible.

The terms of techniques, the
choices
of
language
,
imagery
and
allusions
are all tools to build up the characteristics of the
authors
and understanding their perspectives on their
social
and
cultural
norms
, which by judging their characteristic we can understand how it
affects
on an
individuals
connection with
other
people
by the influence of
social
and
cultural
norms
in their
own
community.
