summarize three theories mentioned in the reading and the points in the lecture about cause of extinctions D6yGo
The reading states that three theories explain the big extinction which happened at the end of the Triassic period and killed half of the species and provided domination of dinosaurs. It provides three reasons to support this claim. On the other hand, the professor opposes this argument and refutes each of the points made in the reading. First, the reading claims that the sea levels went down and many species that were living in shallow water or coastal areas died. This led to a breakdown in the food chain and caused the death of other species. However, the professor mentions that usually sea levels change from time to time, and it often goes down. The species that live in coastal and shallow-water ecosystems are capable of adapting to the changes. He also mentions that In order of an enormous extinction, such as the one that happened in the Triassic period, a sudden change of sea level was needed, while falling the sea levels at that time was gradually and it could not cause a huge death. Second, the passage states that vast volcanic activities happened at that time and produced huge amounts of SO2, following by which, reduced the temperature of the Earth and killed species. The professor opposes this idea and believes that SO2 only stays in the air for a short time and then combines with water in the atmosphere and turns back to the surface of the Earth. So, this gas could not decrease the temperature for a long time and bring death to a vast number of animals on the Earth. Third, the passage argues that there was an asteroid that hit the surface of the Earth and left a great amount of dust spreading in the atmosphere and blocked the sunlight, thus animals died without getting sunlight. However, the professor refutes this idea and mentions that a few scientists believe that an asteroid might have hit the surface of the Earth and also she adds that, no crater, where the asteroid hit, was found and the only one that was found was related to twelve million years before extinction. She believes that it is a very long time to do anything with extinction.
