According to the Reading passage, Altruism is a type of behaviour in which animals perform selfless acts for another animal or group of animals. This selfless behaviour is seen both in animals as well as humans. The passage also talks about an example of meerkats which is a mammal habituating the grasslands of Africa to understand what are the traits shown by altruistic animals. In the example cited, the meerkats keep a safe guard while other in the group look for food and in this course if there is any danger from the incoming predator to the group of meerkats, the safe guard gives a warning alarm. This signal allows the predator to notice the safe guard and the group can disperse quickly or can stay in group to fend off the predator. The passage details that by standing guard there is no advantage obtained because the guard cannot eat food and therefore remains hungry. Moreover, the attention of the predator towards the guard increases the chances of becoming a prey. However, these details of the example have been challenged in the lecture with the recent study done on these meerkats of Africa. The studies suggest that the group of meerkats eats some food before going for hunting and the guard been given a larger part because of which the guard is not hungry. The second detail as suggested in passage was challenged on the grounds that the guard stands near the burrows such that if any predator is in sight, the guard alarms everyone with an alarm and quickly goes into the burrows protecting it from falling prey to the predator. On the other hand, the group of meerkats show movements of either dispersing or gathering thus gets noticed by the predator and have more chances of falling prey than the guard. These qualities of the guard are very complex in order to mark the traits that are to be considered as altruistic or not. The lecture also notes that what type of actions can be called altruistic such as a person donating a kidney to a relative or may be a complete stranger will never receive credit for this action from the person or from the society per say.
