It seems that humanity creates new products every year to solve their problems more efficiently, such as cars to horses, light bulbs to candles, or auto vacuums compared to handheld vacuum cleaners. The recent development of computer science since the early 1960s has also posed a great threat towards employment in the engineering, physics, mathematical, and management information fields. Although it seems that the company owners are at fault for decreasing the job demand, it may be the rapid development of technology that is threatening work. While most believe that business owners are to blame for the increase in robots replacing humans in the workplace, the accelerated improvements in technology are more of the reason that the demand for human labor is less needed for jobs nowadays. Machines have significantly decreased the need for human labor over the years. It is incredibly easy for an individual to carry out the work of several people with just a simple button on a machine. For example, rather than transporting very few goods via horseback (also assuming a horse comes with its basic living essentials, food, water, rest, etc…), a truck can carry thousands of pounds in its load and travel much faster than a horse. Overall, a truck is just much more efficient than a horse, so it seems that they have completely replaced them in the modern-day. Another field you can see the recent “overtake” of computers is in the medical department. Careers such as anesthesiologists or common surgeons are currently being replaced by robots. To further prove this, the Watertown Regional Medical Center in Wisconsin released a letter on March 28, 2021, about replacing all of their anesthesiologists with certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs), because it seemed like a safer and more effective option compared to humans doing the job. This brought up an opportunity for several doctors to show concern about computers taking their work at a rapid pace. Another interesting job that has been threatened by computers is in the security department. The company Knightscope has developed a monitoring robot called the K5 and advertised on their website it is able to work 24/7, outdoors, and in cold or rainy weather. They replace the need for a security guard in malls, hospitals, warehouses, airports, or even big gatherings such as music festivals. It seems almost too easy for robots to replace our work in our modern world, but there is a lot of reasoning behind this. The reasoning behind humans being replaced so quickly now is the combination of the fact that a machine can process and produce the work of several people and the fact that they can do that in a matter of minutes. Although their costs can get very expensive, machinery and computers do not need to be paid a salary like humans. This makes them extremely cost-effective for manufacturers, especially in the long run. Because of this, the increased demand for workers specializing in computer science grew. In 2019, there was a recorded 15% increase for computer scientists. The only expenses needed for machines are their installment as well as maintenance, which is by far much cheaper than its counterpart, humans, which require much more, such as a salary, breaks, and sometimes insurance. The legal system needs people who can refer to laws and decide on their own whether an action is just or not towards the client. Politicians are also difficult jobs to replace with a robot. Countries governed by machines just seem like a story out of a dystopian novel. Emotion and common sense are vital in politics, so having a robot that has no emotion or empathy would be cruel to have one act as a politician. Surprisingly, teachers are also vitally important to be humans as well, because they are able to understand the needs of students as individuals, and it is also easier for people to learn directly from human knowledge. In the future, machines will probably end up taking most of our jobs today, but there will always be new jobs created that only a human could take, as well as ones that only a human could have.
