I am very pleased to write this letter of recommendation for my former student, Ms. Do Thanh Huyen, for your EMJMD Partner Country scholarship 2022/2024. I have known Huyen since I was her Lecturer in two subjects: Consumer Behaviour in Tourism and Marketing of Tourism, and her research supervisor at the Faculty of Tourism Studies of University of Social Sciences and Humanities – Vietnam National University. I saw her burning passion and enormous potential and witnessed her in both academic achievement and personal development.
For academic knowledge and research skills, Huyen stood among the top students in both courses I instructed. She was always a proactive and competent student who yearned to participate in discussions and focused on details in every individual and group assignment. After participating in supporting Rikkyo University for their research about Sustainable tourism and an exchange program in South Korea, she contacted me for her research. She expressed her passion for Vietnamese cultural values and strong interest in creating sustainable tourism products focusing on cultural materials based on her frustration with the lack of attractive tourism products in Vietnam. After the discussion with me, she set up a field trip to several local handicraft villages and a detailed survey of foreign tourists then came back with a completed research structure of Creative tourism. She proposed ideas of creating and developing Creative tourism products for local handicraft villages based on case studies “One Village, One Product” in Thailand and Japan. As a result, with her inquisitive mind and excellent interpretation abilities, she achieved Third prize in Science Research for Students Contest and got 9. 8/10 for her dissertation, which was the highest point of the class. Her great score, particularly in tourism subjects, was in the top 10 of the class, providing strong evidence of her intellectual abilities.
Besides her achievements in studying and researching, Huyen showed enthusiasm in extracurricular activities. Throughout 4 years at university, she originally generated ideas and coordinated effectively 60 team members from different classes of the Tourism Young Club to organize numerous activities of faculty and university, especially the annual World Tourism Day celebration. Last but not least, she was selected as one of the two brightest students in the Faculty to join the TPO Tourism Universiade in South Korea and the only representative to take part in the Youth Exchange Programme in Japan. Huyen had perfect opportunities to broaden her horizon of tourism development in the Asia Pacific Region and to participate in various cultural activities with international students. This unique experience had exposed her to studying and working with people from diverse backgrounds, which is highly beneficial in the pursuit of an education abroad.
I am confident to say that Huyen has a comprehensive and profound insight into tourism knowledge. Her personal character with a strong passion for travel, research capacity and a wide network of peers and seniors in the industry will guarantee her success in any further studies or careers relating to tourism. I highly recommend Huyen for an EMJMD Partner Country scholarship with the firm belief that her true potential will fully blossom after an intensive Master course. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require any further information.
