Plagiarism in the academic world has become a pressing problem in many countries today. What are the causes? How it can be solved? G3b6m
In most cases, we face people plagiarizing commonly in educational contents. While the driving factors behind this are desire to get a good grade and fear of failing, poor time management, we can deal with this problem by paraphrasing and providing references. In order to address the situation in an effective way, it is necessary to understand where it stems from. The most frequently stated reason why students choose to plagiarize is that they try to get higher scores among others. In fact, if they do best in exams they gain fame around their atmosphere, what is more, that may influence the scholarship they take for their study. Another reason might be that most students commit academic dishonesty during the tests to avoid failure. Because if they cannot pass the exam they will be punished by teachers or parents and they will have to retake them. This can be ended up with exclusion in some cases. In addition, candidates may cheat during the tests because of not having enough time. As students have lack of knowledge they may get confused and worried about the results. Consequently, they cannot plan their time and have to copy from some kind of ready materials. That being said, I believe that this problem of students not using their own work can be tackled taking a number of actions. First and foremost, examinees should use several kind of restatements to fix plagiarism. I mean by this, instead of copy-pasting the idea directly, they should rewrite it in their own words. In other words, exam takers should maintain the sources they used in the content. To be more exact, they must write the names of the websites or publications which have been cited from. One more thing is quotations must also be used in order to indicate that the text has been taken from another paper. In conclusion, although the issue may seem a serious one, I feel that the measures mentioned above would be the perfect solutions to deal with it.
