Spending my childhood in the residential colony of Pakistan’s Oldest Fertilizer Plant “Pak-Arab Fertilizers”, as my grandfather used to work there in Workshop Department. Listening to the conversation my grandfather and his colleagues used to have cultivated my interest in science from an early age. My interest and understanding of chemical engineering & its application in industry, developed after my matriculation examination, when my grandfather took me to his workplace for one day. On that day, I visited almost all sections of a fertilizer industry i. e Machinery workshop, Technical Store, Product storage/warehouse and Central control room. The moment I entered central control room of ammonia plant; I was mesmerized to know the fact that all those giant vessels in the field are being controlled by a bunch of people (mostly chemical engineers) sitting in CCR monitoring the various critical parameters at their terminals. It looked to me like a huge cockpit of a commercial flight. That visit triggered me to search more about engineering fields and their industrial scope. A continuous research of next 02 years, made it easy for me to decide chemical engineering as my major for undergraduate studies. I really liked the fact that it involves dealing with huge amount of data and it touches almost every field i. e manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, design and construction, pulp and paper, petrochemicals, food processing, business services, biotechnology, and environmental health and safety. I had the good luck to have the opportunity to study at University of the Punjab, which is the oldest, largest and the most prestigious university of Pakistan. Those four years of extensive study and experimentation in the subjects of Heat transfer, Fluid mechanics, Mass Transfer, Mechanical Operations, Process Control, Chemical Reaction Engineering, Energy Management etc. instilled in me the desire to become a researcher. During my undergraduate I have worked on a research report “Production of activated carbon from Pakistan indigenous Coconut shell”. At my final year of bachelor’s degree, I proposed a plant design project titled “Gasification of Municipal Waste”, which was based on the type and amount of waste produced in Lahore (Pakistan’s 2nd largest city). Both theses assignments being sort of my first venture into research work, it greatly enhanced my research ability and broadened my academic vision. After my graduation, I was fortunate enough to get into country's 2nd largest Urea Producing conglomerate, Engro Fertilizers Limited. During my 4. 5 years tenure in the company, as Production engineer on a 2000T/day Urea plant I have worked on multiple projects i. e. Corrosion loss profile of Urea Reactor and carbamate condensers & research on corrosion impact on CO2 stripper under different temperatures. One project that is very close to my heart was reduction of environmental impact of Urea Plant startup. In this assignment I headed a multi-disciplinary team of 05 individuals, that had worked on data gathering, analyzing, and benchmarking different Urea plant technologies. After a thorough research of 04 months, we were able to propose a new startup procedure for the Urea plant that was reviewed and approved by OEM (TOYO Engineering Japan), as a result of modified startup procedure we were able to reduce 68% ammonia vented in atmosphere in each startup and startup success rate increased from 62% to 100%. Working on such projects that involved data management, gathered from multiple instrumentation, and making sense out of it, polished my analytical and problem-solving skills. As a result of such assignments, I was able to certify as Six Sigma Green Belt & Black Belt by American Society of Quality (ASQ), (a data driven certification that mainly involves complex statistics techniques and variations reduction methodologies i. e DOE & ANOVA). Engro Foundation spends around 100 million PKR annually as (CSR) Corporate Social Responsibility, in the spirit of community service, I have been actively involved in organizing committees of multiple initiatives i. e. Sahara School (a school for underprivileged community), Technical Training college (an institute to produce indigenous technical talent) and Pela Qadam (initiative to implant artificial prosthesis). University of Saskatchewan's chemical engineering program looms large in my mind, mostly because of its outstanding faculty and interdisciplinary approach to engineering. In my own quest for a suitable graduate program, I was thrilled to learn that the university was among the top 15 research universities in Canada. In addition, U of S provides an ideal climate for me to develop my cross-disciplinary interests. In particular, the presence of a faculty with a diverse set of background and each specializing in different areas would foster, I hope, fruitful discussion with different professors and help me broaden and enrich my research. I have thoroughly thought about my future, and pursuing master degree is the next big step in my plan.
