My personal statement and how I trained my students ygoWr
First of all, I have experienced teaching English to high school students for a year. Moreover, I have taught intermediate level of English speaking to different learners from diverse backgrounds including from highschool students to graduates. My main responsibilities were mentoring, training their English speaking skills and being their speaking partner. My classroom style was simple but I found out that it's so effective. I made lots of surveys and got to know that most of the learners prefer a class with more speaking activities and practical learning style than a traditional teaching style. So first of all, I always made a get-to-know session before the class started. By sharing a little of myself, and having a great conversation with each other, I can break down barriers between students and teachers, therefore they can see me as their friend, speaking partner or just like their classmates. This means, they feel that they can be themselves and come out of their shells. My main goal is to train them not only their English speaking skill, but also to make them improve their confidence, communication skills and also to make them know how to study English effectively and efficiently outside of the classroom. For the lecture and sharing session, I always chose a theme once a week. Every week, I shared with them new vocabularies, idioms, phrases, grammar patterns and knowledge. And I offered a number of fun and innovative activities such as Impromptu speech, Discussion, Debate, Game session, Role-play, Presentation and Speaking competition. I got to know that students prefer more exciting and challenging styles than boring lectures. But yes, it would depend on my students' level and preference. For me, I adjusted and fixed my classroom style according to the learners' needs and preferences. Once I met a student who is so shy to speak up even though he knows vocabulary and sentences. His problem is being so shy and awkward to speak up in front of people. For that kind of student, I trained to boost his confidence level firstly, making a very comfortable environment to speak freely and encouraging him to speak little by little. And I made a 30-day speaking challenge. I gave one-on-one coaching to each and every student, even in detail. I was always on standby when they were talking in class, to share the words they didn't know, to correct their mistakes. We could move forward more if both the trainer and students are balanced. So in class, I always make sure to communicate with them. It was more fun so that they were no longer shy and awkward to talk, actively participate in every single activity that I did. That is one of the realistic and effective techniques that I always used in my class.
