Recent advances in communication technology have ushered in a new era of virtual classrooms, so an increasing number of educational institutions have granted their students permission to partake in online classes from their homes. Even though this has negative effects, I believe it is a positive trend in the long run.
On the one hand, distance learning could cause a multitude of difficulties for teachers and students. First, lacking real-world interaction between them often results in students losing concentration and wasting time on other priorities rather than being engaged in virtual classes. One undesirable consequence is that students tend to neglect their studies and underperform in exams. Second, technical issues can cause a lot of confusion for both teachers and students. For instance, the loss of internet connection during lectures may lead to the fact that students have difficulty understanding lectures, and teachers find it difficult to impart knowledge via virtual means.
However, I believe the benefits of virtual classrooms would outweigh the drawbacks. One benefit is that computer-delivered classes can eliminate the need for students to commute from homes to schools regularly, translating into a noticeable reduction in exhaust fumes discharged into the environment from private cars. Another benefit is that educators believe that this is the only viable mode of learning in the middle of global pandemics. Perhaps the best example of this would be that traditional classes all over the world have been canceled in response to the coronavirus outbreak, and schools have offered distance learning courses in an attempt to contain the spread of the virus.
In conclusion, I am convinced that despite the lack of face-to-face communication and technical limitations, distance learning has greatly contributed to the protection of the environment and acted as the last resort amid disease outbreaks.
