Although I agree that with the use of modern communication means it is no longer necessary to write a letter, I think that writing a ltter has its own charm and importance.
On the one hand, modern means of communication e. g. telephones, cellular phones, emails etc have reduced the time cosumed in contacting with your loved ones or conveying important official messages. For example, on the past when no other means of communication were available but to write a letter; many important messages couldn't be communicated timely and efficiently which resulted in a great trouble as letter could not reach the destination in the due time. Furthermore, by the development of of modern ways of communication it has become much easier to share the most important news with your loved ones or to ask about the whereabouts of your loved ones who are far way.
For example, my father reside in USA due to his work while I with my family live in Pakistan. Once my grandmother fell seriously ill and there were no hopes of her recovery but we couldn't contact my father timely to tell him about her condition as no fast means of communication were available at that time and we were hoping for some miracle or to get some way to contact my father. but now with the modern means of communication such problems are solved. Now with the development of modern means of communication we can contact our father at any time of the day.
On the other hand, writing a letter to your loved ones also looks very fascinating. You write a letter to your loved ones and then wait for their response. This time between writing a letter and then waiting for its reply is very exciting.
For instance, in the past when no other means very availabe to communicate but to write a letter people used to write letters to communicate to their relatives and to express their feelings of joy or sadness and then waited for their replies. This all was very charming as it showed their emtions and concerns for each other. It also improved their writing skills.
To conclude, though I agree that with modern communication means it is no longer necessary to write a letter. But I think writing letters should also be continued as it encourages one to dsecribe his emotins by writing and improve interpersonal skills.
