Topic: Internet of Things is the most technology of the 21st century
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a new technology that has created many changes in our modern life. As a result, IoT may be the most prominent technology of the 21st century in the field of digital technology.
There is no agreement on a precise description of the Internet of Things. Ménard, A. (2017) defined the Internet of Things as sensors and actuators linked to software via networks that can manage and control connected items, machines, and even living things. While IoT is described by Gartner Hype Cycle (n. d. ) as a network of physical things that have embedded technology to communicate, detect, or interact with their internal states or the external environment.
Moreover, it should be noted that although this new technology is dubbed the "Internet of Things, " it is not necessarily a component of the Internet. According to Mallon, S. (2018), the Internet of Things (IoT) is the expansion of internet connection beyond personal computers and mobile devices. IoT allows us to link 'things' to the Internet and networks that utilize Internet technologies. It has the ability to communicate with a wide range of non-internet capable devices. After being embedded with technology, the devices come to life and may communicate with one another over the internet. This indicates that they can be monitored and controlled remotely. For example, a light bulb that can be turned on and off using a smartphone app, a motion sensor, a smart thermostat in your office, or a linked streetlight.
The term “Internet of Things” has just introduced by Kevin Ashton since 1999. However, the true history of IoT had been around for much longer, at least since the late 1960s, with the advent of the Internet. According to Scammells, J. (2020) the world's first IoT device was created at Carnegie Mellon University in the early 1980s. When a group of students developed a customized Coca-Cola vending machine that can report its inventory and if newly loaded beverages were cold or not. In the year 2000, there was a steady increase in interest in IoT technology, which led to the first International Conference on Internet of Things, held in Switzerland in 2008. The Internet of Things boom was aided by its inclusion in the Gartner Hype Cycle for upcoming technologies in 2011 (Khvoynitskaya, S. , & Penn, J. (2019). Since then, linked devices has become widespread in our daily lives. According to Scammells, J. (2020), in 2020, there were more than 27 billion linked devices on the Internet of Things, with researchers expecting this total to rise to more than 100 billion devices by 2030.
Because the Internet of Things has so many applications in our daily lives, it might be claimed that it is the most important development of the 21st century. Kumar, S (2019) also gave proof for this statement, he said that IoT is a revolutionary technology that has transformed traditional lifestyle into a high-tech way of life. With the rising engagement of IoT devices and technology in our daily lives, we may see a significant transformation. From monitoring machines on the production line to tracking the progress of navy ships, sensing changes in physical environments to maintaining a closer eye on human vital signs, IoT systems have the potential to help businesses get more out of their physical assets, revolutionize how we run our cities and homes, improve health outcomes, and even save lives. Smart cities, smart homes, pollution management, energy savings, smart transportation, and smart industries are examples of changes thanks to the advent of IoT.
Aside from that, IoT have numerous benefits that set them apart from other new technologies. Businesses may benefit the most from IoT. Some advantages are industry-specific, while others are applicable to a wide range of industries, such as monitoring overall business operations, enhancing customer experience, saving time and money, increasing worker productivity, and so on. According to Gillis, A. S. (n. d. ), IoT forces firms to reconsider their business strategies and offers them with the instruments to improve their business plans. Apart from business, other industries, like hospitals and farmers, are expected to profit the most from the deployment of IoT systems—up to $3. 7 trillion by 2025 (Ménard, A. (2017).
The Internet of Things (IoT) has brought about a variety of changes in our lives since its advent. It can be seen that IoT has numerous applications and provides numerous benefits. Therefore, we cannot deny that IoT can be one of the most important technologies of the 21st century.
