In some countries in Europe, some children from the age of 11 or 13 go to schools to learn more practical skills that will help them get a job. Other children stay in schools which provide a more general academic education. What should schools do to prepare students for the world of work? v.2

What is more important - practical daily-life skills or academic education? Schools in a few countries in Europe teach practical skills with the aim of making them employable in the future. This essay will discuss the benefits of teaching practical skills to young people and why a blend of both academic education and practical education is optimal. 'What was the use of learning trigonometry when today I am selling insurance policies? ' I heard this from a dear friend which forced me into some deep thinking. Academic education, though necessary, fails to prepare young people for the world outside of school. Young people need to learn a few skills early on in their lives like - people skills, negotiation skills, oratory skills etc. and undergo internships. It is well understood that most of the business transactions happen on the pillar of trust and face value. If students are taught about the long-term benefit of building a good image for themselves, their careers can be much more rewarding. Similarly, it is expected out of employees to be good negotiators. Further, good oratory skills are a prerequisite for being a business leader. Lastly, vocational training and internships can give valuable economic lessons to the youth. If a 14 year old spends 10-hours a week in a cake shop, he or she will learn the acts of business, much quicker than others. I don't believe that students who only follow the general academic curriculum fail to become excellent people managers or employees. It's just that they learn all this the hard way - through hurdles and bad experiences. Academic education has its own importance and responsibility. It lays the foundation for future experts in the field of medical science, astronomy, technology etc. Without these learned people, we all probably would be living without electricity and clean water. To get back to my previous example, I learned that trigonometry has a crucial role in designing aircrafts and flying planes. So everything has its own value. The blend of academic education and imparting practical skills is the correct teaching approach, in my view. Every school should conduct aptitude tests for its students to determine their strengths and weaknesses. Counsellors can then suggest the optimal mix between the two form of studies. Ofcourse, every student should be required to study a bit of both. This form of study will try to produce well-rounded personalities, who shall work excellently in the outside world post school.
