“Don’t be afraid to give up the good to go for the great” this is my motto for winning the life. At the age of 16, I started my own start-up with three team members and now I am 17 years old and earned approximately 860 CAD within a year. My name is Nikhil and I am currently in class 12th at Dev Samaj Vidya Niketan School, Gurugram, Haryana, India. My subjects are Physics, Chemistry, Maths, English, and computer science. I have a great interest in Computer science, space science. Apart from that, I am a district-level champion in lawn tennis.
I got my first personal laptop when I was 12 years old, I used to watch a lot of movies and playing games but then I watch three movies “The social network”, “Interstellar”, and “Who am I? No system is safe”. Basically, these movies are about the biography of Mark Zuckerberg, space science, and a fictional story of a computer genius respectively. From that time, my curiosity toward computer science and space science dramatically increased and I made my decision that I will make my own brand in the IT sector like Accenture and Deloitte. I started learning python in 6th class but it was really difficult for me to understand, I lost my interest in programming because I did not understand anything, My sister is a data scientist so she taught me the basics of python. I watched many online tutorials on YouTube and read a lot of e-books. After two years, I knew the basics of Python, JavaScript, and HTML and really work hard to advance my skills. I made some core projects like Snake game, Hangman game, calculator in python. In 9th class, everyone in my class was learning about computers and networks while I was learning more powerful languages such as C++ and, At the beginning of class 10th, I started learning Unity for game development.
The year 2020 was the most important and life-changing year for me, there was complete lockdown everywhere in India so this was the perfect time for being productive. I enrolled in more than 15 courses such as The data scientist’s toolbox, Algorithms, AI for everyone, Game development, Programming for everybody, data analysis for machine learning, neural network and deep learning on Coursera offered by prestigious institutions including Stanford, John Hopkins, Deeplearning. AI, Michigan state, and University of Alberta and other courses from Udemy. I started practicing my skills on HackerRank, I have a gold badge in python and a silver badge in Java also verified skills certificates of Python, Problem solving, and Java. I participated in competitive programming (Project Euler+) and I have 380 ranks among 146243 programmers globally. As I have a great interest in space science and computer science so I decide to combine both of them. I made black hole visualization using JavaScript and HTML, where we can see how photons travel through a black hole’s event horizons. My second project was 3-Dimensional solar system visualization and I also developed an International space station (ISS) tracker in python using NASA’s Official API to get information about astronomers who are currently in ISS and the location of ISS. Apart from that I also developed machine learning, AI and, deep learning projects like the Tesla Lane detection model using the OpenCV library, this model detects the white marking on the roads to detect the lane, I uploaded all my projects on GitHub and now I have more than 1. 1K followers on GitHub. Apart from programming skills I also have leadership and communication skills, I am president of our school computer science club and participated in my school’s seminar where I got a chance to give a speech in front of 500 students to encourage them to follow their passion.
Then the life-changing part of 2020 begins, I had good knowledge of Python, JavaScript, HTML/CSS, React, Tensorflow, Java, and SQL also knew the basics of Django, R studio. So I decided to start my own start-up but I did not have much real-world experience than I did Microsoft and Deloitte virtual internships but that was not enough so I started working with a small web development start-up based in UAE. However, they did not have money for a new member so I work for them without charging any money. In the beginning, I faced a lot of problems with databases but they taught me databases very deeply. Now, that was the best time for a start-up and I started my own company with three team members called GrowMore. It is a basically web development, UI/UX design, game development company, I did not have funds for advertising. It may seem silly but I started free advertising on LinkedIn, Freelancer, and Fiverr. Basically, people bid on freelancer for themselves but I bid for GrowMore. For instance, a client on freelancer had a budget of $100 then we bid $50-$60 for the same project and give all information to the client about GrowMore but it was not so easy. Trust is the most expensive thing in the business and we were completely new in this so it was really hard to develop trust. We gave our words to clients that we won’t charge advance money then we got 3 clients and 1 of them did fraud, we gave them files but they did not pay us but we earn our first $140 from other 2 clients. We approach small and new businesses on LinkedIn and offer them our affordable website plan. We developed five dental clinic websites, agriculture land websites, and many more. I started with 0 and now I earned 860 CAD. Currently, I am attending a course of Ritesh Agarwal (CEO at OYO and one of the youngest billionaires in India) I met many IT consultants, entrepreneurs, and young minds there and shared our experiences. I have pretty good time management skills, It is really difficult to manage a start-up with school work so I decided to study in the day and working on projects at night.
I never do programming to get a job, I do programming as an art. I love programming because I can develop whatever I want to. For instance, I combine my interest in space science and computer science and made black hole visualization. I do not want to see my passion as a dream, I work hard for my passion even at a very early age So, it is supernatural for me to opt for computer science. My curiosity toward computer science is very good even I did not wait for my further studies, I enrolled in a lot of online courses and learned different programming languages. And also my start-up is based on computer science and it is really important for me.
As regards my future plans, Most of the accidents happen due to the drowsiness of drivers and drunken driving. So, to solve this issue, I am working on a website, which will provide instant support to drunken drivers and other drivers who feel sleepy due to lack of sleep, I build an ML system using Python, OpenCV, and Keras which alerts the drivers when they get sleepy and I already made this system but this not enough, I also want a system in that website that will only for a drunken driver. This system will scan the driver's face and every movement and if it seems unusual then notification and live location will be sent to the nearest police officer. This will definitely decrease the accident rate. Unfortunately, I am not capable of this so, I will try to complete this project during my undergrad study. Apart from that, I will do a job as a software engineer in tech companies to gain some experience. India does not want employees anymore due to its population, India wants companies that give jobs. So, I will make my ‘GrowMore’ more successful lT company like Accenture.
The University of Alberta is one of the best universities in Canada. It is the only university on my priority list because of the amazing research in AI, ML, Computer vision, and many more. I have had an eye on your researches for the last 5-6 months. You have the best professors and I would like to attend my classes with brilliant professors especially Sir Duane Szafron and Sir Paul Lu. I took a course on Problem-solving, Python programming, and Video games offered by the University of Alberta on Coursera where I loved teaching methods with the relating examples of Sir Duane Szafron and Sir Paul Lu. The main reason is the solid student community, I made some friends in your university and the common thing is many students have brilliant start-up ideas and I do not want to miss this opportunity to study with the best professors and talented young minds.
