It would not be incorrect to assume that data will rule the modern world. With the massive amount of insightful data generated by offline and online activities, it is only natural that professionals use this data to analyze, assimilate, and amalgamate the insights. Its scope is expanding all the time, thanks to the increasing capabilities of computing power and sophisticated algorithms. My first encounter with data science occurred during my spring 2018 semester at Shiv Nadar University. I went on an industrial tour of Omax Autos, where they showed me how they use computer vision to detect defects in the manufacturing process. For this, they created a convolutional neural network and trained it with photographs (type of data) of all the possible flaws. This automation is quite revolutionary, considering they used only a Captured image of the object to spot imperfections. This approach helped the company to save a significant amount of money and time. This technology piqued my interest and inspired me to pursue a career in data science. In the following summer break, I have decided to start learning about data science, and I joined a Bootcamp on Analytics and Advanced Excel organized by Ernst and young. The program was enriching in laying the fundamental concepts clear; Having had the basics sorted out, I wanted to take the learning a step further. My friend recommended me a course on machine learning by Andrew ng. This class provided me an excellent overview of machine learning. The topic of deep-learning piqued my interest the most in the class. I began my quest for deep-learning knowledge by enrolling in Coursera's deep-learning specialization. I finished all of the courses that were available over the next six months. It provided me with a lot of theoretical and practical knowledge about neural networks. While I mostly talked about the factors that led to my course selection, what excited me the most was the Project I have done in my undergrad. Under the guidance of Prof. Venkatramani, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Shiv Nadar University, I worked on the project "detecting aeroelastic structural failures in airplane wings using mathematical modeling and machine learning techniques, " We developed a machine learning model which will classify the type of structural failure present in the structure. We have tuned the hyperparameters in such a way that the model produced an exceptionally high accuracy in predicting the kind of failure. the experience of working on this Project was gratifying; this made a significant impact on me to develop a severe inclination towards pursuing a career in Data Science. I completed my under graduation in mechanical engineering with a distinction from Shiv Nadar University. The program offered a flexible curriculum to bring out the best in me at college. While I enjoyed most of the courses on offer, I found myself more inclined to the subjects which involved having programming and mathematics in them. I specialized in computational techniques and finished my minor in Economics with an emphasis on Finance. I was awarded the prestigious "dean's list" award four times for my outstanding academic performance; this award is handed out to the top performers in each school every semester at SNU. Besides academics, I would like to talk about the extracurricular activities I participated in while in college. I was a member of the genesis team, which competed in Enduro-Student-India's national ATV building competition. I spearheaded the innovation sub-team. We are in charge of installing numerous intelligent systems in the car to assist the driver. I also played cricket for SNU and represented my campus in several inter-college matches and tournaments. Keen to ensure a balanced development of my skill set in academic and professional environments, I have decided to take an intern opportunity at Isuzu in my third-year summer break of college. I worked in the plant's logistics division as a research analyst. We worked on a project to improve the factory's efficiency by revising the movement plan and reorganizing the layout to reduce production time. For this, we carried out a time study on the movement of supplies between the storage unit and destination. We analyzed the results of the time study and offered a new plan to increase efficiency. This change resulted in a significant improvement in production time. This internship provided me with a holistic view of working in a product-based company. After graduation, I wanted to work in a real-world industrial setting to understand the software industry's nuances better. I worked as a programmer analyst for about a year and a half at cognizant Technology Solutions Pvt-Ltd. I worked on a project for our American healthcare client "Aetna" during my time at the company as an application developer for the billing system of the group insurance segment using COBOL and Db2 technologies. My role is to develop the code for the business logic required in the application for each planned update and track the deployed code for any potential defects. Working on large projects in multinational corporations has taught me a lot about teamwork and the importance of being a good team player. I have also trained in the TensorFlow framework and SQL as part of the skill-development program during my stay. The projects and training I've completed with the company have provided me with an excellent learning curve, acquainting me with various software tools and technologies. The data science program at NEU Boston is fit to my requirements for my masters. Not only do I wish to obtain a degree to boost my profile for better career opportunities, but I also look forward to an experience that provides me with the required exposure in the dynamic field of data science.
