The reading passage and the lecturer both talk about the hypothesis that the Edmontosaurus migrated south during winters. While the reading passage provides arguments in favour of the hypothesis, lecturer says that the hypothesis is not convincing. First, the reading passage mentions that as the edmontosaurusexclusively fed upon the plants, it is very unlikely that they lived in north slope during the winter. This, the reading passage mentions, is due to the fact that the vegetation cannot grow in the harsh cold climate of the poles in winter. On the contrary, the professor argues that the period when the dinosaurs recided were much warmer than the present counterparts. She gives example of a modern day animal, rosevelt elk, which lives in herd but does not migrate, challenging the second claim of the reading passage. Finally, the reading passage mentions that the edmontosaurus were physically capable to migrate as they could achieve very high speeds and maintain the pace, which is very necessary for any animal to migrate. Thus, as mentioned in the reading passage, it was very likely that the edmontosaurus migrated as they satisfied a necessary condition required for an animal to migrate. On the other hand, professor says that though the adult edmontosaurus were physically capable enough to migrate, the young edmontosaurus were not able to achieve the high speed needed for migration. Hence, because adult Edmontosaurus cannot leave alone their young ones it was very unlikely that they migrated, professor argues. In this way, professor challenges the claims made in the reading passage.
