Many people have strong feelings about the value of television, especially now that programmes are available through satellite and over the Internet. There are those who suggest that increased access to these programmes does more harm than good. However, there are those who insist that it is a good thing. There are three main disadvantages about satellite and Internet television. Firstly, people, especially children, have access to programmes with unsuitable content. For example, porns programmes, pictures or videos or games which show images of violence or cruelty to other people or animals, and gambling sites. Secondly, More access to TV encourages people, especially children, to watch more TV, so there is less time for hobbies or family. It can destroy a good relationship in the family and lead people to have social problems. Lately, The programmes available may not be culturally appropriate. Some of these programmes disrespect other cultures such as mocking skin color culture, national costume or language and accent. However, satellite and Internet television also has its advantages. In the first place, It gives people access to programmes all around the world, which will be a big opportunity to learn about other cultures, just sitting at home watching TV and getting to know the millennial culture of the Great Wall of China. In addition, A huge choice of programmes is available, for example sport, music, film, and documentary channels. With these interesting programmes, These are great to help develop cognitive skills, analytical skills and help to increase your child’s general intelligence. Lastly, programmes in other languages, for example English, can support language learning. Regularly listening to foreign languages will improve your listening skills. In conclusion, despite the advantages, satellite TV should be used wisely and awareness, knowing what we use it for and with whom.
