This table illustrates variations in consumer expenditure on different sectors of life in five different countries in 2002.
Obviously, food, drinks and tobacco covered the largest range of consumer expenditure mainly because these are the most basic and daily needs. Ireland and Turkey spent most in this sector at approximately 30%( 28. 91% and 32. 14% respectively), while the other three countries consume between 15% and 19%. Clothing and footwear sector stood second in consumer expenditure ranging between 5. 4% and 9%. Almost every country spent similar rate of percentage on these items except Italy, the highest spending consumer( 9% ). The least spending sector of these countries was leisure and education, which shared from nearly 2% to 3. 2%, exculded by Turkey with expenditure of 4. 35%.
The common trend of these countries showed leisure/ education is the least spent sector from which it is presumable that these countries are enjoying government aided policy of education. As a consequence, higher consumption rate of consumer went to basic needs such as food, drinks and tobacco.
