The table gives information about the quantity of children ever born to Australian women aged from 40 to 44 years in 4 different years 1981, 1986, 1996 and 2006.
It is noticeable that fewer and fewer children were given birth by middle-aged women and the number of women who had two children was highest in the shown years.
It can be seen that nearly 3 out of 10 women in 40-44 years age group had two children in 1981, which was slightly lower than in 1986 (at over a third). The percentages of women who had either one child or none motsly clustered from 7. 6% to 9. 7% over a 5-year period from 1981 to 1986 while those of women had three and more child were much higher (approximately 28%) except the figure for women had four and more child in 1986, at 18. 9%.
The period between 1996 and 2006 recorded a slight increase in the number of childless woman and woman with one child, and reached to 15. 9% and 13. 2% in 2006, respectively. However, the figures for woman had three and more child saw the opposite trend and decreased by 5% over a decade, while the percentage of women with two children had a very little change, at about 38%.
