Overall, there was a considerable increase in the number of people taking part in walking, aerobics, swiming and running, while an opposite trend could be seen in the figure for tennis. in particular, the quantity of people participating in walking was highest among five type of physical activities over the timescale. In more detail, in 2001, 4, 5 million people took part in walking compare to 1, 1 million people in aerobics. At the same time, the quantity of people who participated in swimming stood at 2. 1 million while the figures for tennis and swimming were lower, at 0, 9 million and 0, 9 million respectively. The period from 2001 to 2009 saw the number of people taking part in walking climb dramatically to 6. 8 million. At the same time, aerobics and running followed similar trends to waliking, with the figure rising to 2, 4 million and 1, 7 million. By contrast, the figure for tennis underwent a slight increase from 2, 1 million to 2, 3 million. By contrast, the quantity people participating in tennis decreased slightly before remaining unchange at 0, 7 million.
