The table illustrates the number of travellers visiting six tourist attractions in 1996, 1998 and 2000 in Australia.
It is clear that the Great Barrier Reef was the most attractive tourist destination among those places over the period shown. In addition, the total number of visitors to those destinations of interest showed an upward trend except for Central Eastern Rainforest Reserve and Macquarie Island.
In 1996, the Central Eastern Rainforest Reserve recorded half the number of travellers in comparison with the Great Barrier Reef. From 1998 to 2000, the Great Barrier Reef experienced a dramatic increase in the number of visitors, followed by a slight increase of about 200, 000 people in 2000. By contrast, the Central of Eastern Rainforest Reserve saw about 20, 000 fewer tourists every two years.
Among the remaining destinations, visitors who were into Tasmania Wilderness and Blue Mountains shared a similar pattern. The figures then increased to nearly 500, 000 and 600, 000 after 4 years. In terms of two other rest places, more visitors chose to visit Shark Bay than Macquarie Island. While Shark Bay experienced a rise to 89, 000 visitors, the figure for Macquarie Island dropped slightly to only 330 at the end of the period.
