The figure remained stable in the period from 1980 to 1985, however in the period from 1985 to 1995, the number dropped gradually to under 3 million by 1995. From 1995 to 2000, the figure had a slight rise. Turning to the female Australians, the number of them who smoke rose rapidly in the period from 1960 to 1975, and peaked at about 3. 5 million in 1975. However, the figure fell slowly in the period from 1975 to 2000, decreased to almost 2 million by 2000.
