The line graph illustrates how many marriages took place in the UK between 1951 and 2001. In general, the total number of marriages and the number of first marriages witnessed a downward trend, while that of remarriages seemed to increase during the given years. It is also noticeable that the number of remarried couples was always the lowest. In 1951, there were around 400. 000 married couples in total, including nearly 350. 000 first marriages and 150. 000 remarriages. From 1951 to 1971, the number of remarriages and total marriages both slightly dropped, but from 1961, the total number of married couples increased by roughly 50. 000 couples and reached a peak in 1971. The figure for couples who married for the first time marginally went up to slightly over 350. 000 during the same period, and the year 1971 also saw the highest number of first marriages. From 1971 to 2001, the number of first marriages and total marriages started to fall dramatically to approximately 250. 000 and 380. 000 respectively. By contrast, the number of remarried couples moderately grew and after 1991, this figure climbed substantially to 200. 000.
