In 1951 around 350, 000 first marriages were celebrated. This number increased fractionally and reached its spike in 1951. However, the numbers soon dropped precipitously and fell to its lowest level of 250, 000 in 2001. On the contrary, the number of remarriages hovered around a modest 150, 000 in the first thirty years. Yet, following 1981, the rate rose significantly with its growth accelerating in 1991 to soar to a peak of 200, 000 by the conclusion of the period.
