Overall, the amount of the UK resident travelled abroad was generally higher than internation visitors to the UK throughout the period. It is also noticeable that France was the most popular country visited by UK people in 1999. Starting at 13 million UK people went to visits abroad in 1979, after which it rose slightly to 20 million by 1986 before climbing dramatically hit a peak at nearly 55 million in the final year. Similarly, the number of international travellers to the UK showed an upward trend over the period in question, with 10 million in the first year, it rose steadily each year and reaching at over 25 million in 1999. In 1999, around 11 million UK residents chose go to France to relax, was ranked the first, which was a bit higher than Spain, at over 9 million.
