Overall, it is clearly evident that while the number of first marriages witnessed a downward trend in the given period, the opposite was true for divorces. In 1961, the number of first marriages in the UK was approximately 350. 000, whereas the figures for divorces and remarriages were nearly 50. 000 and 25. 000 respectively. Over the following 10 years, the number of marriages increased gradually to nearly 400. 000. The figures for divorces and remarriages also witnessed an incline to nearly 150. 000. From 1971 to 1999, first marriages saw a significant fall from 400. 000 in 1971 to just around 200. 000 at the end of the given period. By contrast, the figure for divorces and remarriages rose significantly from just about 25000 and 50000 to 150000 and 100000 respectively.
