However, after 2006 their number witnessed a significant growth, peaking at just above 40000 students in the years from 2009 to 2010. The figure of native students commencing universtity in Australia followed a similiar pattern until 2002 when it jumped up to 200000 students. Despite that, it experienced a steady drop, which continued to 2006. By 2008 the number of local students starting their higher education had increased again to roughly the same figure as in 2008, but in spite of this fact, it dipped slightly to about 200000 at the end of the ten-year period. Overall, the total number of overseas students and those of them who were starting their further education showed an upward trend throught the entire period. Whereas the whole number of native students also followed this trend, those of them who were commencing made an exception as their figure tended to fluctuate.
