The graph compares the amount of garbage that is collected and recycled annually in the United States over a period of 45 years. In the first decade the extent of waste produced by Americans was almost static, as well as the figures for recycling. In the late 70s the amount of recycling saw a dramatic rise and gradually continued in the early 90s. While the extent of reusing the collected garbage reached a peak at 40 per cent, producing and recovering waste was also increasing gently. This rise continued sharply to 1995, at the extent of 60 million tones annually. Nonetheless there was a slight fall in the figures for recycling and by 1997 it dropped to 30 per cent. However between 1997 and 2005 it rose gradually and by the end of the period it had reached 40 per cent per year again.
