In 2001, France was the most popular option for students in Vietnam to study abroad, with over 3, 5 million students, in comparison with Russia and America with 3 million and 1, 5 million respectively. Over the next five years, there was a decrease of approximately 1 million in the number of Vietnamese students in France and Russia. By contrast, America experienced an increase of over 2 million in the number of international students from Vietnam.
From 2005 onwards, the number of Vietnamese students studying in the US grew dramatically and reached 5 million in 2015. France also followed the upward trend after five years of stability, reaching roughly 4, 5 million in the last year. During the same period, the number of Vietnamese students in Russia hit a low of below 2 million in 2010 before rising gradually to 2, 5 million at the end of the period
